Hot Sauce with Ancho and Negro Chilies

Hot Sauce with Ancho and Negro Chilies
I love adding a little hot spice to my meals.   Here is a  quick hot sauce with some dried ancho and negro chilies from my local Spanish market, El Paisanos, in Santa Fe.

Hot Sauce Recipe:

Ingredients:

4 dried ancho chilies, seeded
4 dried negro chilies, seeded
1 tomato, chopped
2 garlic cloves, choped
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1/2 lime
Salt to taste

Directions:

1.  Remove stems and seeds from chilies.
2.  Soak chilies for 20 minutes in hot water.
3.  In a saucepan, combine the chilies, tomato, garlic, and cumin.
4.  Cook on low heat for 10 minutes.
5.  Puree ingredients.
6.  Stir in lime juice and salt.

  1. This must be really hot sauce!! I like the recipe and may have to try it with a different version of chilies as I am not sure where to get the ancho and negro chilies here in UK. Was it OK soaking the chilies in hot water? I would have thought it would make you sneeze a lot!

  2. Hi Mina, these chilies are not too hot -- i am a fan of real, real spicey! there not hot enough to make you sneeze when soaking. I just moved here to the southwest where chilies are abundant - i cannot wait to try some more types.

  4. Hi Mina,

You are asking where to get Ancho & Chile Negro here in the UK. My friend Katya has a website that sells all types of Mexican Chillies it's called http://www.mexgrocer.co.uk she's been selling chillies, sauces and other authentic mexican food products since 2006 and her prices are really good. Here is a link to her chilli page I'm sure you will find what you need there :
